a soundtrack for the rush

By: Max Segawa

Strictly speaking, as a word, urgency or urge can take on numerous meanings. When I get an email with ‘URGENT!!’ in the subject line, I rush to click on it as soon as I can. When I go out grocery shopping hungry, the urge to grab a package of cookies whispers to me like a devil on my shoulder. At its core, we may associate urgency with a sense of rush, the need to take action. The closer to the end point, the stronger the urge. In some ways, it’s a lot  like the buildup in a song: the drum beats increasing exponentially until the drop, the pitch increasing along with the tempo until a release.

To me, urgency also has a layer of chaos. The unexpected requiring swift action, like spilling coffee over your laptop keyboard and the ensuing reaction.

I’ve compiled a few songs I think fit the feeling of urgency, organized by its differing forms we may experience in our day-to-day lives. Songs with beat changes that give you the urge to bob your head. Songs with what I think is the definitive ‘urgent’ sound: amen breaks and sirens. Songs with sounds so jarring they make you run that much faster, lift that much heavier, climb that much higher.
